Vormetric wins 2014 SC Award for best encryption solution
Vormetric recognised for security industry leadership and technology innovation in helping enterprises to protect what matters; their sensitive data at rest
LONDON, UK – 30 April, 2014 – Vormetric, a leader in enterprise data security for physical, virtual and cloud environments, today announced that SC Magazine Europe has named Vormetric Transparent Encryption as Best Encryption Solution in the SC Europe 2014 Awards. The awards recognise innovative security solutions worldwide, rewarding industry-leading security vendors and cutting-edge technologies. In awarding Vormetric in this category, the SC Magazine Europe Awards judges commented that Vormetric provides a 'neat and comprehensive solution' with 'good evidence of success’ and ‘good user feedback’.
Business data can now be accessed from nearly anywhere in the world, and while this is a landmark achievement in business operations, the risk posed to sensitive data is unprecedented in the industry’s history. Not so long ago, perimeter defences were sufficient – data was protected by walling off the outsiders and trusting insiders. However, this is no longer the case, and maintaining control of multiplying sets of data over a range of interconnected systems is becoming a big challenge for many enterprises. Equally, with the emergence of cloud and big data environments, a growing number of users who access that data must to be monitored and controlled.
“At a time when the mounting challenge of shielding data from threats both inside and outside the fence are weighing heavily on the minds of IT professionals and business leaders alike, we are extremely proud that our data security solution has been recognised in this way by one of the most well-respected publications in the industry,” said Paul Ayers, VP EMEA at Vormetric. “With a steady stream of cyber-attacks and espionage making today’s headlines, and given data has no natural defences, it is abundantly clear that data needs a solution like Vormetric Encryption to keep it safe.”
Ayers further expressed concern about how the profile of the insider threat has dramatically shifted in recent times – thanks in no small part to the activities of Edward Snowden and the Target and Korea Credit Bureau data breaches – and how looking to data-centric solutions is essential to protecting what matters. “Today the threat from within has morphed beyond the disgruntled or rogue employee to now include malicious privileged insiders or those who are compromised by advanced malware typical of Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs). With Vormetric Encryption, businesses can manage user access in a granular and accountable way. Furthermore, a solution like ours enables workers to get their jobs done without putting data at unnecessary risk.”
Vormetric’s unique approach encrypts data and then uses fine-grained, centrally managed policies to provide access to data by process, user, time and other parameters. Vormetric Encryption enables seamless key management, with no change to application and enables a strong separation of duties across physical, virtual and cloud server environments. Unlike other products, Vormetric Encryption provides a complete solution across platforms (Linux, Windows, Unix) and operating environments (data centres, virtualisation, big data and public/private/hybrid cloud) supporting all data types (structured and unstructured).
Fortunately, recent research by conducted by Ovum on behalf of Vormetric into the Insider Threat highlights that European companies are taking steps to raise security awareness and tightening their IT security and risk management practices by heavily investing in data security solutions – and encryption is leading the way.

Research from Ovum reveals growing risk of data breach from ‘Insider Threats’
LONDON – April 3, 2014 – Vormetric, a leader in enterprise data security for physical, virtual and cloud environments, today announced the findings of its European ‘Insider Threat’ survey, conducted in 2014 with industry analyst firm Ovum. The research, which surveyed more than 500 IT decision-makers at mid and large size organisations in the UK, France and Germany, found that only nine percent of businesses feel safe from insider threats, with nearly half of UK based respondents (42 percent) acknowledging that it is ‘privileged users’ (system administrators, database administrators, network administrators, etc.) that pose the biggest risk to their organisation.
